Since September 2024, at Iniciativas de Justicia Transformadora<\/strong> we have been working side by side with Jornaleras de Huelva en Lucha<\/strong> and the Central Sindical Obrera Andaluza (CSOA), putting our legal advice and support<\/a> at the service of collective organisation and the defence of the rights of women agricultural workers in Huelva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a close and ongoing collaboration that allows us to work directly on the ground and combine different tools: legal action, trade union action, support and accompaniment, and a strategic perspective built from the grassroots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because defending rights also means working alongside those who know first-hand the conditions in which those rights must be made effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The working reality of women agricultural workers in Huelva<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cultivation of strawberries and other berries is a key economic activity in the province of Huelva, but behind this industry lies a particularly complex employment reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seasonal employment, working conditions in the fields, the situation of migrant workers, recruitment in countries of origin, and the difficulties involved in exercising certain rights create a context in which labour, social, migration and gender issues intersect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not all women workers start from the same position or have access to the same tools to defend their rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the case of workers recruited in their countries of origin<\/strong>, the employment relationship is compounded by factors such as the temporary nature of their stay in Spain, their dependence on recruitment arrangements in order to travel, language or administrative barriers, and difficulties in accessing independent legal advice and support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this reason, it is essential to adopt a perspective that takes into account how all these circumstances intersect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A long-standing collaboration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our connection with the reality faced by women agricultural workers in Huelva predates this ongoing collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2021, Teresa Ramos Antu\u00f1ano<\/a> took part as a legal expert in the Feminist Observation Brigade promoted by Jornaleras de Huelva en Lucha, La Laboratoria and Museo en Red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That work led to the legal report \u201cThe situation of women agricultural workers in Huelva\u2019s strawberry fields\u201d<\/strong>, produced following fieldwork, the collection of testimonies and a legal analysis of the workers\u2019 situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report addressed issues such as discrimination in recruitment and hiring in countries of origin, potential breaches of labour law, occupational health and safety, the exercise of fundamental rights, sexual harassment and harassment on the grounds of sex, and difficulties in accessing effective mechanisms for reporting violations and obtaining protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That work helped to frame in legal terms the issues that the workers themselves had been denouncing for some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the legal report to ongoing support<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since September 2024, we have continued that commitment through regular collaboration with Jornaleras de Huelva en Lucha and the CSOA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legal work is not approached here as an isolated tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is developed jointly with the trade union organisation and the workers themselves, analysing each situation and identifying the most effective ways to defend their rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past year, we have taken this shared commitment a step further by exploring litigation in cases related to recruitment in countries of origin and cross-border work<\/strong>, with the first favourable outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each individual step forward matters, but it can also open up possibilities for other workers facing similar situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Law, grassroots trade unionism and mutual support<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Iniciativas de Justicia Transformadora, we believe that legal advocacy has greater transformative potential when it works in dialogue with collective organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this reason, our work combines labour law advice<\/strong> with grassroots trade unionism, support and mutual aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not only about reacting when a right has already been violated. It is also about creating tools to understand those rights, exercise them, defend them collectively and challenge the structures that generate inequality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working alongside Jornaleras de Huelva en Lucha allows us to do this from a feminist and intersectional perspective<\/strong>, connecting labour law with the inequalities related to gender, origin, administrative status and socioeconomic position that shape the reality of many women agricultural workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We continue walking this path together because we believe that putting legal tools at the service of collective organisation is also a way of building transformative justice<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
